Our ancestors lived amongst nature more than most of us do today, they used the sun and moon as their calendar and as a guide when to rest and when to rise. We have become disconnected to these observances and, combined with the blue light from our smart phones, have disrupted our circadian rhythms. These are finely-tuned, 24 hour cycles that help our bodies to carry out essential functions.
All life on earth requires sunlight or sun energy for existence. The movement of the earth on its axis and around the sun create precise cycles of day and night, as well as seasonal changes. These forces of nature program our DNA to conduct all physical activities with perfect precision. Therefore, it is understandable that when these essential rhythms are disrupted it can affect our appetite, memory, well-being, impulsiveness, suicidal tendencies and sexual behaviour.
In Patanjali’s famous Yoga Sutras (which will be explained later in this paper) it is said: –
‘Turn the combined effort upon the sun and you will understand the earth’. Sutra 11,27. Meaning all life on earth is solar powered, we are solar powered. We are part of the earth. If we learn to organise and channel the solar power within us it will help us to master our earthly bodies.
If we do not get enough sun exposure, and are not in alignment with the environment, it can lead to many negative health implications including metabolic disorders and depression. The best way to combat this is to spent some time in the sunlight/daylight each day, and to aid sleep by not using your mobile phone for at least two hours before bed. Use a red or orange lamp that mimics natural light like candles.
